Undara - Volcanic Lava Tubes

We packed up at Cobbold Gorge & headed off to Undara, which was a leisurely 3hours away - except if your van decides to get a flat tyre. This tyre incident was right at the end of the corrugated gravel/dirt road & thankfully only 50metres from the Forsayth runway entry, so I safely pulled in here (yes, I am the driver, while hubby works on the laptop). I am so grateful for technology & our tyre management system that alerted us each time to our tyre issues. This tyre had a leaky valve and we have had this tyre have this issue a few years ago, so knew that there was no fix, just a tyre change was needed. The kids loved helping to swap the tyres over, and we were back on the road again with two tyres to now sort out once we get to the Atherton Tablelands in a few days time.

The road between Forsayth & Undara was a mix of gravel (not as bad a the Cobb Rd to Cobbold, single lane bitumen with compacted dirt edging (which is always interesting when a car comes from the other way), then the occasional double lane bitumen. We were glad to see the end of those roads & had a lunch stop over at Mount Surprize, before heading only 45minutes down the road (on normal bitumen thankfully) to out accommodation for the next two nights at The Undara Experience. We took the afternoon after setting up, to then head out on a bush walk to Aitkinsons Lookout, before the kids jumped in the (cold) pool, set up a fire & called it a day.

Day two at Undara we had booked a tour of the Volcanic Lava Caves. It started with a bus ride, then a walk to the caves, a lesson in rocks & history then into the ancient Lava Caves. These structures are amazing and words can not describe how they look, smell & feel. It is hard to imagine how they were created so many thousands of years ago & how important they are to the ecosystems out here. If you haven’t heard of them, do some googling & add it to your “must visit list” as it is one-of-a-kind. The two hours went really quickly and we were soon back to the van for a quiet afternoon. The kids decided on another bush walk, this time to the Bluff Lookout. This gives an amazing view around the vast Savana lands (dry & rocky ground with sparse trees), highlighting the contrasting of the green lush folliage at the entrances to Lava Tubes & then the view down to the 100 mile swamp. We called it an early night, ready to hit the road in the morning heading off to the Atherton Tablelands.

A new recipe we tried while there is this delicious Penne Bolognese on Cookidoo. Check it out, as it was easy & the family (aka Boys) loved it....
