Beautiful Bowen

Updated: Feb 14, 2023

Today we took off for a day trip to #Bowen. Every other time north we have skipped Bowen & not stopped in except at a small coffee shop on the outskirts. We tried to get a booking in Bowen this trip, without success, so figured a day trip was the next best thing.

No trip to Bowen is complete without a stop in at the #BowenInformationCentre for a photo with the #BigMango & a #MangoSorbet (made with 100% Kingston Pride Mangoes from Bowen & nothing else). Moving on, we headed to #HorseshoeBay where we found a park (this was a busy little place) & put on the hats for a hike up to the #RotaryLookout & Old #RadarStation. The first hike to the Rotary Lookout was short and easy, taking about 10 minute and the kids easily completed it without any complaining. The view was amazing once you managed to get up the angled ramp at the end to the top of the boulder. These boulders & rock formations were amazing & huge. We then headed onto the Radar Station. This was a more challenging walk, with hundreds of old well worn & aged steps, taking about 20mins to get to the top. At the top were the remains of the Radar Station that function for 3 years during WWII.

After the walk back down (which was nearly as challenging as the way up) it was time for a swim at Horseshoe Bay. The kids & hubby got out the snorkel gear to try some viewing from the beach. They didn't see much, but enjoyed the play.

We then headed off for a drive to #RoseBay around the corner, then to #BirdsFishBar at the Bowen Marina to grab some fish & chips for lunch. These were amazing, so if you are ever in the area, they care highly recommended. We took out Fish & Chips up to the #FladstaffHill for lunch with an amazing view. Much to the boys delight, some of the Australian Defence Force were up on the hill too with a solid looking Army vehicle. We have seen lots of these around on the highway & the kids are fascinated by the different vehicles.

Homeward bound then, back to the van in #AirlieBeach for our final night here before a few nights free camping further north. See you tomorrow ~Lisa~
